Index of Flinders' Hosts and Hostesses on Mauritius

The 39 names listed below include all the people who entertained Flinders apart from Madame Louise Genevieve de Labauve D'Arifat. In addition, Flinders was received into a number of households for which he did not record any repasts. Where Flinders received repeated hospitality, a minimum number of such occasions is indicated against each name, an overnight stay being abbreviated as. O/N.

Mme. Allies Town house; great friend of Madame D'Arifat. Died August 1807.
M. and Mme. Airolles Occupied Le Perouse's old house with a plantation at Mesnil. Mme. Airolles, who died December 1808, was the mother of Mesdames Chazal, Chevreau and Bickham. Dined 3 times, O/N twice.

M. and Mme. Cap-Martin Mme. daughter of M. Perichon. M. a Lt. with N. Baudin in Geographe. O/N 5 times. M. Cap-Martin died in October 1809.
M. & Mme. Caseau M. a civil commissioner for Tamarin Quarter, where they lived near M. Labauve.
M. & Mme. Catoire Town house; dined twice.
M. & Mme. Chazal Town house and 1000 acre plantation 1.5miles from The Refuge. M. painted Flinders' portrait in 1807. Dined 24 times, supped 23 times, O/N 12 times.
M. & Mme. Chevreau Closest neighbours to M. D'Arifat with plantation (having 30,000 coffee plants) and a town house. Dined 32 times and supped 5.
M. & Mme Curtat Two plantations at Tamarin with sugar and cotton factories; also town house.Dined 7 times; O/N twice.
M. & Mme. Dayot House one mile out of town.
M. & Mme. Deglos Town house and one near Moka. O/N 3 times.
M. Charles Desbassayns Educated in Paris at the University. Engaged in trade and finance in both Mauritius and Bourbon. Married Louise D'Arifat in January 1908. Placed $2000

M. Duval House between Tamarin and The Refuge, nearer to which he later moved.

M. Frobervilles House at Moka. Gave manuscript accounts by others of travels in Madagascar
M. & Mme. Herbecq House at Tamarin near to Labauve's.
M. Huguenia House at Moka.
M. Paul David Labauve D'Arifat Eldest son of the D'Arifat family, taking his name from his father, Marc De Labauve D'Arifat. 4 years younger than Flinders, he made an ideal companion
M. & Mme. La Butte House at Tamarin. Dined five times.
M. & Mme. La Chaise House at Moka. Mme. was M. Labauve's aunt. O/N thrice.
M. & Mme. Lachenardiere House at Moka shared with colonel of the regiment, St. Susanne. O/N thrice.

M. Martin Monchamp One of the island's 12 consultants in the financial crisis. House at Reduit.
M. & Mme. Meurville House near M. Labauve's at Tamarin.
M. Palerne House near The Refuge.
M. & Mme. Perichon Owned the celebrated plantation, Palona, near Palma. Dined twice, O/N once.
M. & Mme. Thomy Pitot Flinders greatest support for all his time in Mauritius. Accommodated him for the 75 days Flinders spent in town, with countless hospitality. Shipowner,
M. Plumet Officer in Mahratta service. Fine 400 acre plantation near Moka. Dined thrice.
M. & Mme. Sauveget Property by River Latanniers a mile or so from town. Dined twice.
M. & Mme. Saulnier M. a principle merchant in town.
M. & Mme. Suasse M. rose from seaman to captain merchant vessels. Civil commissioner at Tamarin. Highly thought of by Flinders. Dined 5 times, O/N twice.
